Reading - Assignment Example In the winter of 1906-1907, Pablo designed the first elements of Les Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignon. The author appreciates that the twentieth century artist developed his concepts in an intensive manner. The design took place through a program planned consciously similar to the works of Gericault and Leonardo. Picasso painted his product on an eight feet canvas in the summer of 1907. Les Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignon provided the rift as well as the divide between ninetieth century art and future designs (modern) designs in painting (Chave 600). It remains the hallmark of art over the one hundred years. Chiva holds that time and events at the time allowed Picasso to do what he did. Nothing was strange because other events were happening in other areas as well. In 1909, Schoenberg composed the Erwatung and The Right of Spring by Stravinsky came to the limelight in 1910. In 1914, when Picasso was doing the later stages of cubism, Ulysses started. Caught up in blue and silver long curtains are five pink women in the painting. Two of the women are in an upright posture raising their arms with the purpose of flaunting their breasts. With protruding black eyes, the women always stare at the viewer. The designer decided to mask the other three women out of the five. Two of the three are dressed in African masks. Of the two, one intrudes from behind one of the cloth that remains jagged and the bother appears squatting in fabrics made of diamond. The author identifies that height carries a few more centimetres than the width in reality. This fact disposes any analyst to be part of symmetry and space. Work done by Picasso on Les Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignon was great and immense any way. The late ninetieth century and early twentieth century witnessed the development of provocative works in the industry with the same theme as that designed by Picasso. Identified in this category are novel by Zola, Pallas Athene by Klimt, and Madonna by

Stereotypes And Fantasies About The Us South Essay
Stereotypes And Fantasies About The Us South - Essay Example Music in itself has been described as an important parameter of culture (Abrams, 2011). What this means is that music is one of the constituent components of culture that can distinguish one culture from the other. Within the varying groups of culture that exists in the United States also, Southern American, or United States South is a core player with much influence in the socio-cultural dynamism of the country. Part of these dynamisms is the type of stereotype and fantasies associated with the South. In this essay, there is a defense for the statement that ââ¬Å"Stereotypes and fantasies about the US South have been a major theme in the development of US popular music.â⬠Common stereotypes and fantasies associated with the US South Historians and cultural experts trace the influence of the South on the socio-cultural dynamism of the US to days before the Civil War when there were accusations and counteraccusations of disparity against the South (Agnew, 2006). They believe tha t the current state of stereotype and fantasies that exists for people in the South is the direct cause of an unresolved conflict that can be traced to the aftermath of the war. Presently, the Southern ethnic heritage can be said to be made up of several cultural identities and differentiations mainly made up of African, Native American and European components (Baron, Hood, and Izard, 1996). Among these people, the commonest form of stereotype that has existed for years is a strong overlook in the US mass media, including literature, theatre and other creative forms of expressions (Kupperman, 2000). In some studies, the percentage of coverage given to this group is only 1% (Agnew, 2006). Generally, the cause of this is due to misconceptions associated with ethnic groups in the South as being cruel, of bad character, and uneducated. This stereotype has also led to a situation of fantasy within the group where they have argued that the Southern is also good for the highest positions o f the land, especially Blacks. How stereotypes and fantasies about the US South have influenced themes of US popular music Indeed, popular music gives a major cultural identity to US as a country. The themes of popular music have somewhat influenced the popularity of this type of music and contributed to its current international status (Kupperman, 2000). Without an iota of doubt, it can be said that the stereotype about the US South, and for that matter, the fantasies that have developed from it therefore has been very influential on the themes of US popular music. Specific examples can be given to how themes of US popular music has for years sought to justify the content of the Southernerââ¬â¢s character, saying that the Southerner is as good as the Northerner for any top decent position within the land. For example in 1983, Blowfly used the theme of his music as a crusade for the possibility of a Black President, titling his album, ââ¬Å"The first black presidentâ⬠. What is more, in 1988, the US hip hop group, NWA made a music video that focused on the theme of a Black person being as fit for the presidency as a White when they had a caption from the White House that read, ââ¬Å"Live from the Black Houseââ¬

Immigration to USA Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Immigration to USA - Assignment Example Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCI) and the Bureau of Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). The jurisdiction and oversight of these agencies was transferred from the Justice Department to the DHS (Rudolph 6). All these were supposed to keep the American security at the realm. The reorganization brought together some or all the 22 federal agencies that formed a cabinet agency called the department of homeland security (DHS). These agencies included the US immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). This department had been part of the department of justice, but was later divided into three new agencies which were housed within the DHS. This restructuring process created the largest restructuring of the executive-branch functions since the establishment of the department of defence after the Second World War (Perrow web). The immigration policy is supposed to ensure aliens and criminals do not gain access to the United States. The officers in the immigration department ar e involved in issuing identification papers and citizenship to the people who meet the requirements of citizenship in the United States. The immigration policy has been tasked with offering service and enforcing sections of the immigration policy in America. There is however a difference between immigration policy service and the immigration policy enforcement. ... While both of these are important elements of the policy, enforcement has been given more emphasis than service. Most people confuse that the work of the immigration policy is just to enforce the policies which is not the case. Mostly, we do not hear about the service function of the policy as the news entirely covers the enforcement section of the policy alone. There has been a huge objection to the law like the Arizona SB 1070 which allows a legal enforcing officer to arrest and detain a suspect if the officer can prove that the person is an alien. However, those in objection point out that it is hard to tell who exactly is an illegal immigrant and who is not. Thus, the law has been deemed to target the Latino tribe of the people in the country. There are various pros and cons to this law. The law has been described as a means of profiling and narrowing down the number of suspects by the criterion of race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion (ââ¬Å"National Conference of State Leg islaturesâ⬠web). This has helped to narrow down the number of suspects. As a method of racial profiling, narrowing down the field of suspects is legal as it helps identify suspects easily. However, the law has its bad side since the law enforcing officers can decide to target a particular race like the Latino. It also makes a certain tribe feel alienated from the rest of the society. Moreover, this law is not only discriminative but also delays justice imposing danger to the suspects. Since the law is targeted at identifying and arresting suspects, there is the likelihood of increased arrests made by the officers. Since the law requires an officer to make an arrest in case they suspect the person to be in the country illegally, the number of arrests is likely to be more and therefore less
Alternative Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Paper
Alternative Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis - Research Paper Example The classic symptoms of RA are swelling, stiffness and pain in the joints. [1] Characteristics RA is characterized by inflammation of the synovium, progressive bone erosion, joint malignant, and destruction of surrounding tissues and muscles. Quality of life Some factors that effect the RA patientââ¬â¢s quality of life are endemic to the disease. This helps to rule out the possibility of other disease. Patients rarely have RA as their only medical problem. It is estimated that seventy percent of the RA patients who are on DMARDS (disease-modifying ant rheumatic drugs) have at least one other disease. The combination of the RA and another co-existing disease ultimately leads to a higher rate of mortality as compared to healthy people. In other words, RA patients age faster than healthy people. This may or may not be the result of the initial onset of RA or whether the premature aging precedes the onset of RA. Statistics 2.1 million Americans (0.5% - 1.0%) are affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Women are twice as likely to have the disease as men. The onset of RA occurs between thirty to fifty-five years of age with a median age of fifty-five years. Forty-nine billion dollars is spent annually for direct medical and lost wages and productivity. This amounts to $8500 per RA patient per year as the average cost of pharmaceutical therapy for rheumatoid arthritis which amount to 9 million physiciansââ¬â¢ visits and 250,000 hospitalizations per year. [2] Alternative Therapies Yoga Yoga is an alternative therapy that has its roots in ancient India. It was used by the Indian culture as a sort of psycho-spiritual treatment for various diseases. Yoga is considered to have a positive effect on mental and spiritual health. The National Health Interview Survey of 2002 on Yoga use in the United States discovered certain traits endemic to people who where regular practitioners. It found that yoga users were primarily Caucasian (85%) and female (76%) with a mean age of 39. 5 years. [3] In this study, it was found that the practice of yoga has a ââ¬Å"modulating effect on physiological and neurophysiologic symptoms.â⬠[4] Some of the documented effects of yoga practice found in this study were; decrease in resting heart rate, increase in baro- reflex sensitivity in healthy elderly patients in addition to significant blunting of heart rate and blood pressure. Other benefits included decreased symptoms of stress, enhanced quality of life, and normalization of mean daily cortical levels in patients with prostate and breast cancer. Yoga is used to treat depression, improve muscle strength, increase endurance, improvement of balance and flexibility. It has also been shown to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hand, osteoarthritis of the knee, carp tunnel syndrome and localized lower back discomfort. RA patients reporting depression and anxiety disorders saw significant improvement in their mental health. By decreasing disease activity, the RA patient has a decreased perception of pain. It was concluded that a yoga program may slow the progression of the disease, enhance physical function, and decrease the risk of falls. Exercise Exercise can be defined as a planned regime of physical activity with the aim of having the outcome of a positive health benefit. [5] Regular exercise is crucial in the battle against RA. Job Analysis Master Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Job Analysis Master - Essay Example It is stated, that job analysis is 'a process used to identify the important tasks of a job and the essential competencies an individual should possess to satisfactorily perform the job'. (Clifford, 1994) The purposes of job analysis are multiple, as well as there are multiple methods for conducting it. The aim of the work is to distinguish the main strengths and weaknesses of the job analysis methods existing at present, with trying to identify the most effective among them, if it appears to be possible; it is also necessary to try defining, which methods are mostly applicable in various instances, and should there be made any amendments to the job analysis methods, which are not most often used. The reasons for conducting the present research are the following: 2. It is not yet understood, whether there is the need for the creation of any new methods, with the aim of which it is necessary first to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the existing methods. The arguments to follow in the work will be based first of all, on the literary sources used in the present work, which are four and are represented by the peer reviewed journal articles and books on the topic. The arguments will also be based on the discussion of the existing advantages and disadvantages of the methods. The main aims of the answer are to be specified as follows: The conclusion to be reached will be based on the set aims, a... 2. It will be conclude which of the job analysis methods at present appear to be the most effective and display minimum disadvantages; 3. It will be necessary to conclude, whether the already described in literature job analysis methods need more extensive learning; 4. It will be necessary to conclude, whether there is need in creating any new job analysis methods. The conclusion to be reached will be based on the set aims, and will include the answers on the abovementioned questions. I guess, it will be beneficial to make the core of the conclusion related to the most effective job analysis methods among the already described. Analysis Identification and coverage of the main issues The rationale for the job analysis in general lies in the aim of protecting the public 'by assuring that individuals, who work in an occupation or profession are at least minimally competent'. (Gael, 1993) Thus, one of the key issues in discussing job analysis methods is in identifying, which of them appears to be more effective, and is thus the most reliable for ensuring this individual safety mentioned. Another key issue, is that despite the extensive literature sources on the topic, the importance of researching job analysis methods with distinguishing their strengths and weaknesses is not given due importance, and thus this work will be an additional attempt to provide the employer with the analysis of the key methods, making him understand the essential role which job analysis methods play in hiring qualified workers. The main methods of job analysis can be identified as follows: 1. Observation. Levin and Ash (1999) state, that the core issue of any observation in relation to job analysis is

The Corpse Bride Analysis with Final Cut Pro Essay Example for Free
The Corpse Bride Analysis with Final Cut Pro Essay Tim Burtons Corpse Bride is about a young man who accidentally marries a zombie bride. Victor Van Dort, and Victoria Everglot, are arranged to get marriage. After Victor ruins the wedding rehearsal, he ï ¬âees and practices in a forest near by, placing the wedding ring unintentional on a ï ¬ nger of a dead girl, who is now saying she is Victors wife. The Land of the Dead holds many bewilderments for Victor while he learns of Emilys past story and get to know one another better. Back at home with Victor away, Victorias parents decide to move forward and marry her to a newcomer in town named Lord Barkis Bittern. Soon after Victor is informed of Victorias impending marriage to Lord Barkis. Victor agrees to die for Emily for their marriage to be valid, after realizing he has lost Victoria. Victoria ï ¬ nds them both at a church and is followed by Lord Barkis. As Victor prepares to drink the cup of poison to kill himself, Emily has second thoughts, realizing she doing the same to Victoria that was done on to her, taking away her happiness. Lord Barkis intrudes, and Emily recognizes him as her former ï ¬ ancà © and murder. Lord Barkis tries to kidnap Victoria against her will, but Victor steps in to stop him. As Lord Barkis decided to leave he makes a speech and accidentally drinks a cup of poison that was meant for Victor. The dead drag the new arrival away for punishment. Emily backs out of her agreement with Victor, and sets him free to be with Victoria. Giving the wedding ring back to him, she steps into the moonlight, she transforms into hundreds of butterï ¬âies, leaving all to assume she found peace. I choose to do this paper on Tim Burtons Corpse Bride because I have always loved the colors, music, story, and even the characters. After all Emily went through she is still optimistic even in her afterlife. Victory fought through the whole movie for true love and in the end was rewarded. The characters do have ï ¬âaws but they are still enjoyable and relatable as well. This movie has amazing colors and lighting. Throughout the movie all the darks and lights are placed in the right spots to create a consistent mood. The characters also have so many shades of color to them. The music is just an added bonus to everything. Some of the songs fun and lively, while others are a bit more serious. Tim Burton always does a good job with his movies, and this one was no exception. While still enjoying all of the reason why I like this movie, I was watching out for all the transitions, cuts, color adjustments, and sound. Knowing that this ï ¬ lm was made by stop motion, made it a lot more interesting to experience. I know that there is only so much editing that can be contributed through a camera, while the rest must be from Final Cut. All the editing was done successfully, and if anything added more to the story and ï ¬ lm. Transitions were clean and nicely cut at appropriate spots. They were not a distraction nor did they interrupt the experience of the ï ¬ lm. The color was amazing, the darks were deep, the colors were pigmented. The editing on the contrast and saturation were perfect for the feel of the ï ¬ lm. The video and sound went very well together. I think that this was a huge factor in creating the ambience to this ï ¬ lm. The cute little features to this ï ¬ lm like how the sound goes with the ï ¬ lm was perfect. A good example is when Emily was playing the piano but her hand broke off and it continued to make the sounds of the keys with every little beat of the hand. Working this Final Cut I know how many options their are to decide between. They choose the right ones at the right time. They worked out every little detail, which Im sure took a while. Only doing a minute project took a few days, I could only imagine working on something that is two hours long. To think that this movie was created with a software that anyone has access too, and is easy enough to learn, is amazing. They did an amazing job on Corpse Bride and only inspires me as a student to reach farther and achieve higher. They successfully created a ï ¬ lm with a decent story line, amazing visuals with the use of colors, sound that enchanted the video, clean transitions from clip to clip and all together an enjoyable experience.

Styles of Two Great American Writers Essay Example for Free
Styles of Two Great American Writers Essay A writerââ¬â¢s style distinguishes him from other writers. The style a writer uses to write a story clearly indicates the tone of a story, vital for the reader to understand the story. The style of a writer is made up of different traits and characteristics used to write the story. These traits and characteristics include and are not limited to symbolism, characterization, and other elements. When evaluating a literature piece for style one should analyze the following five elements: diction, images, details, language, and sentence structure. Two well-known American writers with completely different styles are Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Hemingway and Faulknerââ¬â¢s similarities and differences in style become apparent when comparing and contrasting two of their famous short stories, ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠by Ernest Hemingway and ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠by William Faulkner. Diction involve word choices a writer makes for his story. These word choices may be used to achieve an overall feeling from a reader toward a story. Diction also reflects the writerââ¬â¢s attitude toward his subject. Ernest Hemingwayââ¬â¢s choice of diction in ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠are simple words that directly mean what they stand for. Hemingway uses simple, less complex words to describe both characters and setting. Examples of diction usage for setting are found in the title, ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠(Hemingway 141) and ââ¬Å"pleasantâ⬠(Hemingway 143). The two waiters describe the customer as a ââ¬Å"clean old man a good clientâ⬠(Hemingway 141). Hemingwayââ¬â¢s choice of diction was blunt and to the point. The diction usage does not let the reader get funny ideas or leeway to think anything other than what Hemingway says. This element of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s style reflects when the young waiter states the old man is ââ¬Å"drunkâ⬠(Hemingway 141). The young waiter does not suggest he was tipsy or that he seemed intoxicated, he simply meant he was drunk. Hemingway uses the Spanish word for nothing, ââ¬Å"nadaâ⬠(Faulkner 145) to substitute words from the Lordââ¬â¢s prayer, in the old waiterââ¬â¢s speech of despair and loneliness to interrelate the theme. Building a sympathetic feeling from the reader toward the characterââ¬â¢s way of seeing his lonely world as nothing, was Hemingwayââ¬â¢s intention in doing so. In comparison to Ernest Hemingway, William Faulknerââ¬â¢s use of diction involves more complicated words due to the fact theyââ¬â¢re slang and misspelled. Some misspelled words and slang are ââ¬Å"kin hisn [and] hitâ⬠(Faulkner 145) which stand for the words can, his, and it. The reason for the use of a southern accent as diction is to set the mood of where the story takes place. Racist slurs such as ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠(Faulkner 146) also make up the diction of the story. Such racist slurs are used to build a certain attitude toward the character who says them. Faulkner describes Abnerââ¬â¢s walk as ââ¬Å"stifflyâ⬠(Faulkner 146) which also affects the readerââ¬â¢s feelings about a character. Sarty uses the word ââ¬Å"bovineâ⬠(Faulkner 152) to describe his fat sisters. For many readers who are not familiar with the south or the last century the complex word usage in ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠mean many things and nothing at times, this affects the readerââ¬â¢s attitude toward the story as a whole. The overall use of language in an entire story also makes up the writerââ¬â¢s style. Different types of language would be formal or informal, scientific or abstract, etc. There are no rules to correct language for a writerââ¬â¢s style. ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠uses informal and conversational overall language. Incomplete statements and fragments that cast full scenes in form of conversation create informality of the story . ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËHe hung himself with a rope. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Hemingway 142) Also, a device Hemingway uses when a characters pauses and then speaks again in the following line make up the informal language. ââ¬Ëââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s drunk now,ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬ËHeââ¬â¢s drunk every night. â⬠ââ¬â¢ (Hemingway 142) The language used in ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠by William Faulkner includes colloquial, informal, with some interior monologue. The southern drawl creates a particular colloquial dialect. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËNaw,ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬Å"Hit donââ¬â¢t hurt. Lemme be. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Faulkner 147) Interior Monologue also makes up the element of language. ââ¬Å"I could run on and on and never look back, never need to see his face again. â⬠(Faulkner 155) is Sartyââ¬â¢s interior monologue. Faulkner uses interior monologue to prove Sarty was not allowed to express himself freely out of fear. The sentence structure used in a story has an impact on the readerââ¬â¢s attitude. The sentences may be structured in a variety of ways to get certain points and feelings across. Types of sentence structure include short, long, simple, complex, and even interrupted sentences. Sentence structure in Ernest Hemingwayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠includes regular speech patterns. This would include short, choppy, simple and direct sentences. Examples of these types of sentences include, ââ¬Ëââ¬Å"He has plenty of money. â⬠ââ¬â¢ (Hemingway 141) and ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËNothing. â⬠ââ¬â¢ (Hemingway 141) Hemingwayââ¬â¢s sentence structure also includes long, compound but simple sentences. ââ¬Å"In the day the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference. â⬠(Faulkner 141) Formal, complex and long drawn-out sentences make up the sentence structure in ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠by William Faulkner. Faulknerââ¬â¢s style, most of the time formal and excessively detailed, creates sentences extremely complicated that many times the best way to understand them is to go back and reread the sentence. ââ¬Å"The boy, crouched on his nail keg at the back of the crowded room, knew he smelled cheese, and more: from where he sat he could see the ranked shelves close-packed with the solid, squat, dynamic shapes of tin cans whose labels his stomach read, not from the lettering which meant nothing to his mind but from the scarlet devils and the silver curve of fish-this, the cheese which he knew he smelled and the hermetic meat which his intestines believed he smelled coming in intermittent gusts momentary and brief between the other constant one, the smell and sense just a little of fear because mostly of despair and grief, the old fierce pull of blood. â⬠(Faulkner 145) The five basic elements interrelate to create the style of a writer. After the reader understands style, the tone and the true meaning of a story become apparent. The style of both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are different with only a few similarities. One style (Hemingway) being simple and to the point, the other (Faulkner) complicated and full of details. Although the differences are many, one apparent similarity is the informality in the overall language of both stories. Neither style ranks better than the other. The reader changes the value of each style depending on what they appreciate reading.
