Before starting, read the entire project outline and requirements. During this project you are to do the following: 1) Pair up with a partner and create a business that sells one commodity of your choice (points for creativity). 2) Create a Market Research Survey that will be used to survey 50 students to help you discover what potential customers are looking for in the product your group will create and sell. The survey must include a minimum of three questions. 3) Conduct the survey. 4) Create a list of fixed costs – items and prices. Consider items such as a store, equipment, furniture, advertisement, etc. Use the survey results to revise the fixed cost list if needed. Include the total fixed cost. 5) Create a list of variable costs. With each variable cost include the dollar figure calculated per unit. Once again, use the survey results to revise the variable costs list if needed.Sate the total variable cost. 6) Using the survey results and the total variable cost determine the product price. 7) Write the COST function and the REVENUE function. 8) Solve the system of equations algebraically using the substitution method AND the linear combination method in order to find the break-even point. 9) Create a model of the product. 10) Create a Power Point Presentation that includes the following: †¢ A written introduction including a description of the product. Approaches to Organizational Behaviour

Organizational behavior, relates to the relationship between employees and the employers in an organization. Both are working towards the realization of the goals and objectives of any organization, and a close and fruitful coordination between the two is one of the major factors towards this realization. Organizational behavior approaches are a result of the research done by experts in this field. These experts studied and attempted to quantify research done about actions and reactions of employees, with regard to their work environments. It is a field that has begun developing only recently and new approaches and results are being expounded everyday, as more and more data comes to the forefront. There are various aspects of these theories, since each one deals with complex human behavior. The most important ones are the approaches about motivation. All of them are aimed towards motivating the members of the organization into optimizing their performance and thereby resulting in bett er and more improved performances. There are mainly six approaches to organizational behaviour. They are: 1) Human resources approach ) Contingency approach 3) Productivity approach 4) Systems approach 5) Interdisciplinary Approach 6) Scientific Management Approach * Human Resources Approach The human resources approach is concerned with the growth and development of people towards higher levels of competency, creativity and fulfillment, because people are the central resource in any organization. This approach help employees become better in terms of work and responsibility and then it tries to create a climate in which they can contribute to the best of their improved abilities.Work satisfaction will be a direct result when employees make fuller use of their capabilities. Essentially, the human resources approach means that better people achieve better results. This approach is also known as ‘supportive approach' because the manager's primary role changes from control of empl oyees to providing an active support for their growth and performance. * A Contingency Approach Situations are much more complex than first perceived and the different variables may require different behavior which means that different environments required different behavior for effectiveness. Each situation much be analyzed carefully to determine the significant variables that exist in order to establish the kinds of practices that will be more effective. Therefore a contingency approach to organizational behaviour implies that different situations require different behavioral practices for effectiveness instead of following a traditional approach for all situations. Each situation must be analyzed carefully to determine the significant variables that exist in order to establish the more effective practices. The strength of this approach is that it encourages analysis of each situation prior to action. Thus, it helps to use all the current knowledge about people in the organization in the most appropriate manner. * Productivity Approach Productivity is a ratio that compares units of output with units of input. It is often measured in terms of economic inputs and outputs. Productivity is considered to be improved, if more outputs can be produced from the same amount of inputs. It helps in measuring the organizations effectiveness, it also reveals the managers efficiency in optimizing the resources.Higher the numerical value of this ratio greater the efficiency. But besides economic inputs and outputs, human and social inputs and outputs also arc important. * Systems Approach A system is an interrelated part of an organization or a society that interacts with everyone related to that organization or society and functions as a whole. Within the organization ‘people' employ ‘technology' in performing the ‘task' that they are responsible for, while the ‘structure' of the organization serves as a basis for co-ordinating all their different ac tivities. The systems view emphasizes the interdependence of each of these elements within the organization, if the organization as a whole is to function effectively. The other key aspect of the systems view of organization is its emphasis on the interaction between the organization and its broader environment,, which consists of social, economic, cultural and political environment within which they operate. Organizations arc dependent upon their surrounding environment in two main ways: First, the organization requires ‘inputs' from the environment in the form of raw material, people, money, ideas and so on.The organization itself can be thought of as performing certain ‘transformation' processes, on its inputs in order to create outputs in the form of products or services. Secondly, the organization depends on environment such as, public to accept its output. The systems view of organization thus emphasizes on the key interdependencies that organizations must manage. W ithin themselves the organizations must trade off the interdependencies among people, tasks, technology and structure in order to perform their transformation processes effectively and efficiently.Organizations must also recognize their interdependence with the broader environments within which they exist. * An Interdisciplinary Approach It is integrating many disciplines. It integrates social sciences and other disciplines that can contribute to the Organizational Behavior. It draws from these disciplines any ideas that will improve the between people and organization. Its interdisciplinary nature is similar to that of medicine, which applies physical, biological and social science into a workable medical practice.Organizations must have people, and people working toward goals must have organizations, so it is desirable to treat the two as a working unit. * Scientific Management Approach The fundamental concern of the scientific management school was to increase the efficiency of t he worker basically through good job design and appropriate training of the workers. Taylor is the father of the scientific management movement and he developed many ides to increase organizational efficiency.Taylor showed that through proper job design, worker selection, employee training and incentives, productivity can be increased. The scientific management school advocated that efficiency can be attainted by finding the right methods to get the job done, through specialization on the job, by planning and scheduling, by using standard operating mechanisms, establishing standard times to do the job, by proper selection and training of personnel and through wage incentives.

Case Study on Illy Cafe

Illy Caffe   is one of the ten best companies in the coffee industry in Europe. It was founded in1933 by Francesco Illy, and in 1994 was given over to Andrea Illy. Since its formation, Illy Caffe’s main goal was to deliver the best quality coffee to its customers. Th e company wascareful when choosing its suppliers and always made sure it receives the best quality coffeebeans. However, after the last CEO has joined the company in 1994, Illy Caffe decided to changeits strategy and to become more responsible in the area of its business. The circumstances, whichthe coffee industry appeared to be under in 1989, was the first step toward the strategic changesmade in some companies, like Illy Caffe. Now, Illy Caffe buys highest-quality Arabica beansdirectly from Brazil, Central America, India, and Africa. The company has restructured itssupply chain completely, and has brought many innovations into the coffee industry in Brazil, making it the exporter of the best-quality coffee beans grower and producer in the world. Thefollowing paper aims at analyzing the changes made in Illy Caffe in 1989 and identifying the key issues and their potential solutions in the company’s new strategy. Changes in Illy Caffe’s supply chain describes the strategy and its benefits In 1989 Illy Caffe’s management decided to change its supply chain from a regular one to adirect purchasing. The quality of the coffee played a significant role in Illy Caffe’s business.Company’s CEO and managers believed that coffee loses its quality after going th rough differentstages in the supply process. They believed that the more intermediaries they would have, theworse would be the quality of their coffee. Therefore, changing this situation through refusing tohave a single intermediary appeared to be the most appropriate thing to do. Illy Caffe became thefirst company in the coffee industry, which started buying directly from farmers. In return tohigh premiums, company expected to receive higher quality coffee beans from Braziliangrowers. Brazil was the largest producer of coffee at that time, however, had poor reputationbecause of the bad quality of their products. Illy Caffe was aware of the situation in Brazil, however, it could find required amount of growers only in that country. The company, therefore, decided to teach Brazilian farmers, how to become its suppliers. Since Illy Caffe was good atinnovation throughout its existence, it found a good way to attract coffee growers (not only fromBrazil but from all over the world) and to make them produce higher-quality coffee. The Illycaffe Brazil Quality Espresso Coffee Award was designed in order to find company’s potential suppliers among the farmers from Brazil. The main idea of this project was to create afeeling of mutual benefit from the partnership and to motivate growers to start producing higher-quality goods. Getting an award and winning a competition meant receiving a good opportunityfor the company in the future. The project became very successful, and hundreds of Brazilian farmers were accepted toparticipate in it. Illy Caffe succeeded in finding good producers and to make them become even better through selecting them among other participants to become company’s long -term partners.Illy Caffe wanted to make sure its relationship with Brazilian partners would be strong and longlasting

Business Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 3

Business Ethics - Essay Example In fact, an individual can not achieve the purpose and goals of management without taking care of the daily life needs and necessities of the subordinates. In light of the importance of the role of a manager in an organizational context as discussed above, I would allow the assembly line worker to leave early with his/her child’s teacher, though I fully understand that it is my responsibility to be impartial to the maximum extent and equally take care of the needs of his/her coworkers as well. Despite that, it is often not possible for manager to address the needs of all of the subordinates at any one specific time. There are two types of needs that a manager needs to take care of simultaneously. These two needs are the subordinates’ needs and the business needs. Subordinates’ individualistic needs revolve around their personal lives and have often no concern with the business. On the other hand, business needs are directed at the achievement of organizational go als and are often unconcerned with the individualistic needs of employees.

Leadership Skills in 21st Century Health Care Research Proposal

Leadership Skills in 21st Century Health Care - Research Proposal Example The clinics that offer both general and specialist health care are mostly for Medicaid recipients. There is a wide middle class of patients without coverage-they make too much for Medicaid and are not old enough for Medicare. Even if they are eligible for Medicare, it does not cover all their health needs. Problem Statement: With so many areas of U.S. health care in commercial chaos at present, it is necessary for leadership to include all members of their organizations in decision making. Only with a leader willing to take advantage of what staff offers can a working relationship be established. Another problem area in health care is a better understanding of the needs and wants of consumers. The most apparent issues in health care at present are related to Medicare, Children's Health Care Insurance Program (SCHIP), and Health Information Technology (HIT). Literature Review and Research Design: In the upcoming elections, health care is a major issue. Studies showing current statistics of the number of people who do not have health insurance and the overcrowded conditions in public clinics can be found on the Internet. As for leadership in health care, the need for cooperation is evident in articles and past discussions of what makes a good leader, again on the Internet.

Analysing Changes in Tesco's Environment and how the firm Deals with Them - Assignment Example The current crisis is on the path to exceed the crisis of oil in depth and extent and so the time calls for all the nations to come together and face the existing challenges. The second principle takes into account the actions that are suited to various economic phases. The third principle asks to take a comprehensive approach over horizons of time. The specific measures include measures that aim to support employment. In this measure emphasis is put on emergency employment opportunities that will create new jobs and provide a safety net for the casual workers. The supports that can be provided by the government are increasing the level of subsidies or unemployment benefits. The government can also lend its hand to support re-employment and provide opportunities that will help to develop the vocational skills of the labor force. The support system should also include the persons with disabilities. Among the financial measures the policies includes promoting the financial intermediary services for smooth functioning, to bring the small and medium sized enterprises under the financial support systems, the support system should also consider the large and medium sized companies. ... The company operates in 14 countries across many continents and is the leader of the market in UK. The company is also listed in the LSE (London Stock Exchange). The company held its position during the global financial crisis and faced huge competition. The degree of competition can be determined by share of the market, consumer base, and penetration into the market. The factors that can be accounted for is the â€Å"Terry Leahy factor’. The Chief executive officer of the company declared that the company has only become stronger after recession than it was before recession. Tesco is involved in opening up new stores in different corners of the world. One cannot account for any single reason for the success of the company during the times of recession but the foremost or the prime reason that can be accounted is the focus of the company on the consumers. It sounds simple but rarely companies follow this step. The size of the company also matters. The company took the initiatives to sell more. The resultant was better terms of buying. The Monk & The Riddle Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Monk & The Riddle - Essay Example My viewpoint contradicts Komisar’s concepts that attribute losses or failures to have close relations to entrepreneurship. It is surprising that Komisar relates failure as justified in entrepreneurship while associating factors such as interest as sole motivators of innovation. Komisar’s adventure with the Monk through their trip up hill and back without paying for the services contradicts entrepreneurial primary and core goals (Kosimar 5). Komisar’s actions involve shifting of entrepreneurship focus from harnessing the motivation to make profits. Instead, Komisar advocates pursuit for passion, gaining experience and satisfaction as vital entrepreneurial goals. I believe an individual’s success in relation to entrepreneurship involves gaining and earning profit from initial capital investments. Similarly, it is surprising that Komisar recommends his own experience involving loss value in as a means of success in entrepreneurship. Based on my viewpoint, Komisar’s perception is surprising in relation to other entrepreneurial contexts because it involves accepting losses and lack of vision in developing an enterprise can cause failure. Lenny is a visionary character and ready to make bold decisions. I perceive Lenny as possessing boldness because of his willingness to interact and share his problems. He identified that Randy could assist him. Based on my viewpoint, Lenny’s character can allow him to take risks and, therefore, is a great entrepreneur. Randy expressed willingness to listen to Lenny for several reasons. First, Randy is passionate to assist individuals who are confident to take the most for their entrepreneurial roles. I perceive Randy as a proud character who believed he understood other people better than they did (Komisar 23). Risk takers such as Lenny are always willing to bet everything for their urge to set up entrepreneurial enterprises. Second, Randy expressed concern about the plight of

THe end of solitude by William Deresiewicz' Essay

THe end of solitude by William Deresiewicz' - Essay Example Deresiewicz’s arguments in demonstrating end of solitude do not apply to the entire population both within and outside the United States. The author contends that anonymity is a great contemporary terror (Deresiewicz, 2009). I disagree with this idea because not all persons socialize to the extent of negating anonymity. Today, there are people around the world that Americans have not heard of. On the same note, the existence of some communities in America is unknown to other countries around the world. In other words, anonymity has been, and will remain to be, part of human life. A key example in the anonymity factor is the lifestyle of the Amish people. Amish communities are yet to embrace new and advanced technologies that keep the world connected. When people talk about Amish communities, the actual essence of solitude comes to light. These are people who still live true to their traditions, customs, and culture, all of which date back to hundreds of years ago. In light of contemporary lifestyles, Amish practices are fundamentally isolated from the twenty first century life. The article further argues that there is fear of isolation within and across the contemporary masses. Going back to the Amish community, these people continue to normal and comfortable lives amid isolation from the large population. This is a contemporary example of a specific lot isolated from the herd. Television, modern vehicles, internet, and social media do not feature in any aspect of their lives. With such eminent communities, anonymity and fear of isolation becomes refutable arguments. Moreover, a number of observations across the globe support my position of disagreeing with Deresiewicz’s article. In the United States, majority of the people who live across the mountain ranges are isolated from civilization. Specifically, people living in the Alaskan and Appalachian mountains lead a life way off modern technologies. The fall of internet and social media has not captured

Advantage Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Advantage - Research Paper Example John Lewis is a chain of up market stores that exists throughout Great Britain. John Lewis is one of the best known brands in all of Britain, when it comes to the design; the company has what can be described as brand creative teams that consist of 55 people that help achieve differentiation. This paper will describe the differentiation advantages that John Lewis has in the United Kingdom market. The positive attitude that the company has with design started early in the 1960’s and has continued ever since. John Lewis has been able to take differentiation to another level in the United Kingdom by offering differentiation to its clients as an offer-demand axis. The company initially had a problem with differentiating its products from others in the market because it deals with goods that are standardized. However, despite the fact that the products that the company deals with has the same physical appearance as other companies, it has been able to repackage its products and therefore, the products often appear very different in the eyes of the consumers. The above image shows the way in which the company packages its products, this has been described as one of the best way of differentiation in the market and has set the company John Lewis way out of league for its competitors. With this differentiation technique the company has been able effectively lead from the top and therefore, attract a lot of high end customers. The differentiation has also been intangible. John Lewis is known to be a high end store and consequently this has been one of the company’s differentiations from other competitors in the industry. Therefore, in this aspect if can be seen that the differentiation does not come in terms of tangible perception but rather it is the market that the company wishes to get. One can be able to see the value in the brand which sales on itself and therefore, the object of the differentiation at this position can be to attract

The Myth and Reality of the American West Essay Example for Free

The Myth and Reality of the American West Essay We have all heard the stories about the old west. There are the infamous gunfights, the cowboys that steal all of the women’s hearts, and the many stagecoach robberies. But how can we tell fact from fiction? Where is the line drawn between the reality of the American west and the myth portrayed in the numerous books and movies? Everything may not have been as adventurous as we believe, or as glamorous. But the real question is: what is true and what is not? It is shocking how many misconceptions are made about the old west. I for one, definitely picture what most people probably do. Cowboys are always the first that come to mind. Everyone loved a rustic, rugged, handsome cowboy. They saved the day on all occasions a nd at the end of the day, went and swept the woman off her feet and they rode off into the sunset on horseback together. The cowboys were the â€Å"good guys† who wore the cowboy hat and boots and fought the â€Å"bad guys† in gunfights right outside of the bat-wing door saloons. A mental picture is drawn of two men with their backs to each other taking ten paces in opposite direction, only to draw guns and fight â€Å"fairly† after turning around. Cowboys were the ultimate white, southern gentlemen who always won the lady’s heart. There are, of course, many other myths about the old west. For instance, the legal system; there is the town sheriff with the star badge and uniform worn at all times, who just happens to show up whenever there is trouble. The sheriff settles disputes that break out amongst townspeople and always makes the right decision, in putting the bad guy in jail to bring the ever-so unpredictable outcome of a â€Å"happy ending†. The popular song, â€Å"Cowboy Take Me Away† by the country music group the Dixie Chicks, reinforces almost all concepts of the myth of the American west. The chorus is: â€Å"Cowboy take me away. Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue. Set me free oh I pray. Closer to heaven above and closer to you, closer to you.† This is a prime example of the misconstrued ideas about the west. This verse portrays exactly what every naà ¯ve person believes about this subject. The handsome cowboy comes to take you away to a place where you can forget all cares and troubles you have. He has come to carry you off into the sunset where the two of you will live together where only love and happiness matters. Living the simple life with the man of her dreams, who will treat her with respect and love her unconditionally, is the fantasy of every woman. The entire song portrays the beauty and simplicity of nature and life in the west, where the hustle and bustle of everyday life , elsewhere, doesn’t exist. Who wouldn’t want that? If it only existed†¦ What is the reality of the American west? Well contrary to popular belief, cowboys weren’t actually the heroes. Cowboys were of all races and were mostly poor farm boys. Cowboys were just what the name states which is, males who raised and herded cattle for a living. Most women fell for the wealthy men of a higher class than for mere â€Å"farm boys†. The west wasn’t peaceful, pleasant place that most people picture it as, except for the occasional bad guy. There were many problems in the west including lack of good food, lack of money, constant fighting with Indians over territory, and increasing violence (this was especially true when saloons, brothels, and gambling dens began to open). Another misconception of this time was that of the legal system. In all actuality there was not one at all. It wasn’t until much later, after problems increased even more, that a so called legal system was developed. This was the miners’ courts. Miners in the area served on a jury and settled disputes in that way. This was a very inefficient system, because the miners favored the powerful, popular, and wealthy. The poor, weak, and unpopular were often charged with crimes they didn’t commit. Hollywood has come up with many different ways to make the old west seem so exciting and adventurous. Whether it’s through a song, an old movie, or a fictional book, the myth of the American west comes across as the truth for most people. The truth is never as interesting, so we depend on made up stories to entertain us.

Social Construction Of Gender Cultural Studies Essay

Social Construction Of Gender Cultural Studies Essay Nortons anthology of Theory and Criticism is a collection of influential critical statements that are drawn from the classical era to the present times. These topic areas has been contributed by different scholars who have written on wide range of issues that covers different interest that touches on the history of poetics to post modernity. One of the topics that Norton looks at is criticism of Simone De Beauviors feminist argument and that of Judith Butlers on gender trouble. Judith book, Gender in trouble is a fictional account of womens issues in the modern societies. She borrows De beavouirs feminist theory to analyze some of the issue facing women today. Social construction of Gender Butler is a radical feminist who is trying to examine some of the foundational roots of gender identity that are culturally embedded within the fabrics of the society and is now characterized by political correctness. She was very much influenced by French writers such as Mitchell Foucault, Jean Sartre but above all Simone De Beauvoir. She draws much of her theoretical thinking on about feminism from De Beauviors concept on the Sex second. Simone de Beauvior was born and grew up in Paris in a wealthy and but very religious family background. He later the family lost their wealth after World War one. Her early childhood life was very much influence by her religious faith, but later turned atheist. Even during his formatting years, De beauvior displayed signs of intellectual prowess which hugely influenced his father. She managed to study mathematics, philosophy and literature, after which he ventured into the field of education. It is argued that beauvior engaged in a romantic relationship with both men and women. In her book, Sexuality, Existentialist feminism and the Second Sex, De beauvior talks about the whole use of feminist sexuality by referring to her own sexual experiences in the mandarins. She laments how womens sexuality has been social constructed by the patriarchal system and stereotypes to belong to the lower beds of the society. Unfortunately, mens perception of women is attributed by other factors such as race, class and religion. As a result, men refer to women as weaker vessel and used sex to confine them to the lower levels of the patriarchal system. In response, De beauvior comes up with the concept of feminist existentialism which contains ideological concepts and theoretical framework that underpins these moral changes. Gender as a choice In her book gender in trouble, Butler emphasizes on the performative nature of gender is constantly trying to free itself from cultural oppression, prejudice and sex perversions. Drawing from her role model, Butler argues along the lines of gender and sex in relation to women, lesbians and gay men. From this book, Butler argues that our understanding of femininity is actually based on cultural interpretation rather than scientific examinations. As a result our perceptions of gender and sex are socially constructed or dictated to by what our societies think, say or portray to us. She refers to the term gender as choice to criticize victimization of women as purported in classical literature. We cannot choose sex or our bodies but we can clothe it according to our cultural understanding. Thus, Beauvoirs theory has radicalized our cultural understanding of gender and gender roles. Beauvoir is one of the key feminist thinkers of the 19th century. She advocate for womens freedom in choosing what is right for them and not to be dictated to by nature or conventional social laws initiated by men. She further explains that women should not allow themselves to be defined by biological gender, rather on their personhood. Beavour argues that the societys reference to female becoming a woman is used to identify them with domestic chores and duties such as cooking, cleaning or being a wife or a mother. In addition, her concept of female becoming a woman encompasses the societys obsession with beauty that is being reinforced by male dominated media which also defines what is deemed to be appropriate modes of dressing. Butler explores the relationship between that exists between power and categories of sex and gender. Through this book, she attack some of the prevailing gender assumptions on womens social roles and sexuality as dictated to by male dominated society. Butler therefore reiterates that there is need to differentiate between biological make up of female body and cultural perception of gender. She uses her dominant theme concerning gender as normative to call upon the society to tackle the gender trouble head on in order to deal with some the existing subversive concepts of women. Conclusion Womens liberation thinking of the 19th century greatly influenced thinking of many scholars including academicians and literary writers. One of those literary writers who were not spared by feminist movement was Simone De Beavouir, French intellectual who found her feet in America. Her move to America enabled her to develop a free mind as she embarked on her literary journey. De beavour used her own sexual experience to develop her feminist theory. Today, her feminism theory is being used widely by other postmodern writers an tool for developing independent feminist thinking. One of those post modern feminist writers is Judith butlers who have drawn much of her ideas from De beavour thought of feminist liberation. Through, her book Butler argues that the society in general need to come up with new ways of dealing gender and sex, by tackling what she calls gender trouble.

My House Essay -- Descriptive Essays

The trees are passing along the street like steadily marching soldiers. The car is moving in monotonous rhythm, and the engine purrs soothingly like a cajoling cat. I’m turning on the radio and searching for my station. There it is, 89.7! Out of the loudspeakers come calm, classical music, which sooths my soul and summons memories from my childhood. I feel the tension leave, and I swim away to the days when I was a happy little girl without any problems or worries. Miraculously, the memories come alive for me. I can feel and see things that I saw when I was younger. As a little girl, I had few favorite places where I felt safe and happy. Although I’m not a child any more, I like to go back in my mind to those places where life was always colorful and joyful and when every single day was so eventful for me. I can see this day again, like a movie playing in my mind. As a child, I usually spent the mornings at the house. The house, where I grew up, was big, and it was surrounded with big trees. It had two massive columns on the both sides with a heavy wooden door between them. Above the front door was a big and spacious balcony with a decorative, metal enclosure around it. There were also two smaller balconies on the both sides of the house. The windows were big, too, and they were covered with snow-white lace curtains from the inside. The house looked a little intimidating from the outside; however, it was very cozy inside. The house was filled with music and books. My father, who passed away 6 years ago, loved to listen to classical music and read books. Therefore, I grew up with that music and those books around me. Rudzki I still remember when we all used to sit down together ... ...the sharp, cold air. The forest looked quiet and calm. In contrast, during the summer, the same little forest resounded with life. The singing birds, colorful flowers, and sun created a beautiful mosaic. The forest was definitely an amazing place for children to play. Therefore, we played there for hours or until we heard our parents voices calling us for dinner. The forest is one of my favorite memories. My days, when I was a child, were so exciting. I always found something a unique about each day. We see things in the different perspective when we are children. Nevertheless, at least our memory can memorize those for us, so we can go back there if we want to. I believe that all of us have those unforgettable places in our mind where we like to escape, and where we feel secure and happy. They are our own little havens when we need a break.

The Problem of Teenage Suicide :: Teenage Suicide Essays

The Problem of Teenage Suicide Most everyone at some time in his or her life will experience periods of anxiety, sadness, and despair. These are normal reactions to the pain of loss, rejection, or disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, scientific evidence has shown that almost all people who take their own lives have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder, and the majority have more than one disorder. In other words, the feelings that often lead to suicide are highly treatable. That’s why it is imperative that we better understand the symptoms of the disorders and the behaviors that often accompany thoughts of suicide. With more knowledge, we can often prevent the devastation of losing a loved one. Now the eighth-leading cause of death overall in the U.S. and the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years, suicide has become the subject of much recent focus. U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, for instance, recently announced his Call to Action to Prevent Suicide, 1999, an initiative intended to increase public awareness, promote intervention strategies, and enhance research. The media, too, has been paying very close attention to the subject of suicide, writing articles and books and running news stories. Suicide among our nation’s youth, a population very vulnerable to self-destructive emotions, has perhaps received the most discussion of late. Maybe this is because teenage suicide seems the most tragic—lives lost before they’ve even started. Yet, while all of this recent focus is good, it’s only the beginning. We cannot continue to lose so many lives unnecessarily. Some Basic Facts In 1996, more teenagers and young adults died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined. In 1996, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among college students, the third-leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 24 years, and the fourth- leading cause of death among those aged 10 to 14 years. From 1980 to 1996, the rate of suicide among African-American males aged 15 to 19 years increased by 105 percent. It is a hopeful sign that while the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled from 1965 to 1987, teen suicide rates in the past ten years have actually been declining, possibly due to increased recognition and treatment.

Personal Health Plan :: essays research papers

Personal Health Plan   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park is one of many fourteen thousand-foot peaks in Colorado. This mountain is world known for its alpine climbing and technical rock climbing. My goal is to some day climb what is referred to as the Diamond. This route is 1500 feet straight up, and can take two days to climb. Physical conditioning as well as mental and spiritual condition is a big part of the climb.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Physically I would need to hike to the base of the rock face, which is sixteen miles of up hill, and then proceed with the climb stopping at nightfall and sleeping on a ledge called Broadway. This is all done carrying a pack that weighs forty to fifty pounds. When the climb begins there is no protection except what my partner and I could carry in. Carefully placing each cam and proceeding to the top. This is an extreme mental game, because if my partner or I fall the only link between surviving and falling to the ground is a rope and the piece of protection placed. Spiritually, I have to be in touch with myself and know that what ever happens, it happens for a reason. Luck does not play a big part of climbing, skill and psychological abilities are the biggest assets on the rock.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To start a health plan I feel there needs to be a goal. I have established this and now a date to start. First I need to stop smoking and start an exercise program that fits into my busy life style. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to show how I would train for the adventure I have chosen.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  January 1, 2002 is the date to stop smoking, no more cigarettes. A work out plan and diet will be implemented along with climbing indoors at a rock gym throughout the winter months, then rock climbing outdoors when the weather is better. These will all work my physical as well as my mental health for the climb about to be attempted.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I will visit the fitness gym two times a week, and the rock gym once a week during the winter months. The fitness gym on Tuesday nights will include first walking or running on a treadmill for three to five miles, (depending on walking or running) this should take twenty minutes. The body does not start to burn fat until twenty minutes of either running or walking.

On the Value of a Degree in the Philippines Essay

The employment chances of a fresh college graduate is only 4 in 10, with only 1 in that 4 attaining work relevant to one’s course. Even in light of the unprecedented growth of 6. 6% in GDP over the last year, the labor sector fails to follow suit in what economists characterize as a â€Å"job-shedding† growth. So where does a college degree place us? With the increased pressures on the youth to attend college, many consider the existence of a higher education bubble. The concept hypothesizes, in part, that movements in factors such as tuition payments and unemployable graduates severely decrease the rate of return to a college degree up to a point where it is rendered useless. In the case of the Philippines, effective capping of tuition fees to relatively affordable rates, spaces us from a bubble as of yet. However, it is to be stressed that with everyone jumping in the college wagon all at once – as is apparent now– we will soon find college degrees as no more useful than scratch, and then the true bubble begins. There are too many college graduates. All college students should be aware that although a degree does open doors it loses much of its value as more and more people achieve this accolade. In 2012, a total of 517,425 college students graduated and entered the labor force. With another half a million expected to graduate in March this year, there is increasing concern on their place in the labor market. The number of graduates increase over the years, however jobs increase terribly less, if they increase at all – 882,000 jobs were reported to have disappeared in 2012. Since too many people compete for the same job, employers can afford to lower wages or increase qualifications as much as possible. This is apparent in the over qualification of some jobs – now supermarket baggers or janitors are expected to have had some years of college or even graduated the same, as opposed to the minimum of high school undergraduate in most other countries. College courses are insufficient or incompatible with jobs offered in the market. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) holds job and livelihood fairs across the country, recently offering a total of 360,777 job vacancies. But on a nationwide count only 5,101 job applicants were hired on the spot. In another attempt, the government posted in its Phil. JobNet website 230,000 jobs but only 117,000 applied. Apparently, the jobs created by the government are inconsistent with what graduates believe they deserve or were trained for in those four or more years of education. To add, even once employed underemployment lingers – tainting up to about 7. 2 million job matches – with insufficient base pay as main culprit. Nearly everyone believes a college education is essential. In our society, the college degree has been stigmatized as the best and surest – and sometimes only – path to take in preparation for one’s career. This is contestable however as evidenced in European countries where entrepreneurship and technical education are much more popular and profitable paths than college. The Philippines doesn’t necessarily lack these options, (i. e. TESDA) rather we lack awareness and social approval for these said alternatives. Solutions De-emphasize the necessity of a college degree. The higher education system of countries like Germany, remain stable and un-depreciated, since non-professional or non-corporate jobs are highly popular and equally regarded with college education. Removing the stigma of a college degree can relieve pressure on prices and rates of return to higher education. Therefore, introducing and popularizing technical courses – which are actually highly demanded – can solve much of the Philippine labor problem. Redesigning colleges and curriculums to incorporate in-demand jobs. Supply may be easier adjusted to cope with the requirements of demand, rather than the other way around. Close association with firms accompanied by an overhaul of course curriculums to better suit the needs of employers can effectively reduce mismatch. Administrators and faculty should understand the factors at work in how their programs are depreciating since if the market for college degrees becomes over-saturated we will all pay the price of meaningless degrees and poor opportunity for many in the workplace. Many experts and opinions point to the government’s futile efforts at job creation (i. e. demand) as the main antagonist in this story. However, the equally policy-relevant yet rarely focused upon supply side of labour may offer other, more easily interceded directions. Solving the Philippines’ problems on labour is a tall order however attacking from all sides – both demand and supply – can better efforts towards the nationwide goal of inclusive growth. Peter Green’s first day Essay

Get the order from Bob Franklin. In order to get the order, Peter has to face the problem of â€Å"freight cost†. Secondary contradiction for Peter Green: 1) His supervisor, John Murphy makes no bones about his scorn for the new breed of salespeople at Scott Carpet, such as Peter himself. 2) Tiff with John Murphy. How to deal with the principal contradiction for Peter Green As Peter Green has to face his ethical principle of no lies, he cannot bear from lying to the front office or he will encounter a faith breaking. That leaves only choice is to satisfy Bob Franklin in order to not lose the commission, at the same time, not breaking his ethical rules. There is one way to finish the task and benefit both sides. Peter could ask the company to bring forward a preferential strategy that all the firms that have a long-term partnership with Scott Carpets (Such as Peabody Rug) will be given a certain credit according to the size of the order. In that kind of strategy, Peter will not need to face the dilemma and Bob get what he wants. It’s a win-win situation, job done. Conspiracy? Let’s say it’s an overt one. Whatever happened in system, stayed in system, and solve in system. How to deal with the secondary contradiction for Peter Green First thing, be nice to John Murphy, whatever it’s from the bottom of the heart or act according to circumstance. Show some respect to the supervisors. Secondly, do everything nicely, keep follow the ethic rules but learn to be adaptable. Last but not least, play the overt one, not conspiracy. What if the company doesn’t agree with the new strategy? As to the character of John Murphy, it’s easy to tell his arrogance. By that case, Peter’s new idea may face a very dangerous situation. As the rule â€Å"Whatever happened in system, stayed in system, and solved in system†, Peter cannot bypass the immediate leader (John Murphy) to do the report. By that case, he has to endure hardships (agree with his BOSS John Murphy and show the loyalty to him) to wait the promotion comes. When he gets promoted to, let’s say, District Manager, he can change the rules and play his game.

Since the early 1980†³s, the issue of America†s faltering public school system has become a serious concern. The crisis in K-12 education is one of the biggest challenges facing the nation. Should there be set standardized tests given to students, and furthermore, should the United States adopt a national curriculum to keep up with the standards of other countries? Lynn Davey and Monty Neill suggest in their essay entitled, â€Å"The Case against a National Test† that, â€Å"U. S. olicymakers and the public have been deluged with proposals for national testing†, because the failure of the nation to adequately educate the students of America has an endless list of negative effects. The pathetically low results of American students through international test scores in the United States suggests that with the lack of proper education, generations of children are growing up without the basic, essential knowledge needed to be able to compete in the workplace. Lynn Davey also states, â€Å"But because the United States has no national system of achievement testing, we cannot validly compare students† performance across the nation†, in her essay entitled â€Å"The Case for a National Test†. Albert Shanker, who was president of the American Federation of Teachers claims in his essay entitled, â€Å"Are American Schools Too Easy? † that, â€Å"In countries where there is a national curriculum, fewer students are lost, and fewer teachers are lost because they know what the students who walk into their classroom have already studied†(122). This is a good point, but in the United States students and teachers are allowed to express their ideas creatively. Not all teachers in the U. S. teach in the same manner, and for this reason it would be hard to establish a national curriculum in which all teachers taught the same things at the same time. In his essay entitled, â€Å"The Tyranny of a National Curriculum† Marc Bernstein suggests that, â€Å"People that support a national testing program believe that too many students are failing to perform to their potential and that drastic steps need to be taken to improve their education†. But what American students need is school reform, not more testing. â€Å"More test scores will not magically produce educational improvement† (Davey & Neill). The people that support national testing should slow down for a moment and realize that testing is not the first step in learning, and start focusing on helping students in rural towns as opposed to larger cities. While there are real differences in the educational opportunities of poor and rich students, standardized tests exaggerate these differences by their biases and confuse lack of ability with lack of exposure† (Davey & Neill). â€Å"France and Japan, for instance, have strict national curriculums† (Davey). â€Å"Since a government agency decides educational content, if the agency makes a mistake, all schools are forced to go along with it. Such a risk can be avoided if the power to decide educational content is transferred to state and local governments† (Chapter 3). The American educational system operates in this way, leaving the choices for educational content up to the 50 state and local governments. This is beneficial to the United States because with such a diverse population it leaves the door open to adjust content if needed to suit certain schools in different towns and cities. Freedom is the trademark of America, and people of other countries because of this admire Americans. The American educational system tries to develop freedom and creativity among its students. It allows students to explore their ideas freely and teaches them to believe they can do anything they put their minds to. One can say that the American educational system is different from other countries educational systems. However, one cannot express the idea that the American system is worse than any other educational system. Sure the system does need some reform, but to drastically say we need a national curriculum, I think not.

I must write a after action review (AAR) based off my deployment to Essay

I must write a after action review (AAR) based off my deployment to Afghanistan - Essay Example It therefore exposed me to various aspects of combat missions and on strategic management of operations while on such deployment missions. Among the main areas that the deployment gave me an exposure in are together with the concept of acquisition, concept of command and control, MTOE (modified table of organization and equipment) as well as on power efforts within Afghanistan. Besides, I learned a lot on the responsibilities and the main competences that an acquisition officer within such missions is expected to have in order to realize effectiveness in the entire operations. First, I must admit that the tour served a great learning experience especially in practice of what military science class had taught me. For instance, unlike what theory supposes, that current field operations influence much the concept of acquisition, the tour taught me that the concept of acquisition is and should be centered on the old (tradition) garrison operations. Concerning the command controls, it is worth noting that as much as a command coronel has the power to command the teams he/she leads, other vested interests in pleasing the project managers and the superiors end up confusing and hence effectiveness is compromised on such missions. This could not be well phrased while in the class context but when one is given such a responsibility in the field as I had, I managed to have the practical aspect in the command and control within military science. Moreover, the field experience showed me that the MTOE does not necessarily support the war that the fighters need. It was also through this trip that I understood that redundant operational energy power efforts within Afghanistan could be blamed on the multiple power providing organizations that were in operation within the country. Among most other things learnt from the places visited and over the tasks assigned were on strategic planning, roles assignment and responding to emergencies whenever need arises. When I went out for

The Tobacco Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Tobacco Industry - Essay Example This paper will examine the historical mechanisms through which the tobacco companies exercised their political influence, assess whether they influenced the public policy process legitimately, and discuss how this particular case study affects people generally. As a preliminary matter, from an historical point of view, the tobacco industry has most certainly influenced the public policy process. Their general approach has been essentially twofold. First, the tobacco industry has relied for many decades on financial contributions made to political parties and to individual candidates and incumbents. These financial contributions were not made on the basis of any particular ideological affinity; indeed, until the election of the Clinton administration in the mid-1990s, the tobacco industry contributed roughly the same amount to both political parties. This changed, however when the Clinton administration began to highlight the public health issues involving tobacco. In short, financial contributions were used for many years to influence both parties; after Clinton took a harder stand against tobacco, the contributions continued but predominantly in favor of the Republican Party. These contributions were supplemented by financial contribution s, made through political action committees,, to individual candidates and incumbents. In addition to these "soft money contributions", a second mechanism was the creation, funding, and support of lobbying groups with interests in line with those of the tobacco industry. As the case study notes, the tobacco industry, either of its own initiative or through its proxy, the Tobacco Institute, funded or supported advocacy groups, think tanks, and other research projects consistent with their economic and public policy aims. There was no particular concern for scientific integrity; quite the contrary, as the case study explains, the tobacco industry was most interested in partisan research that could be used to influence public policy in it is favor. In sum, these financial contributions and lobbying efforts formed the primary mechanisms by which the tobacco industry influenced public policy. This influence was profound and remarkably successful; to be sure, the tobacco industry had never lost a product liability lawsuit until 1996, and governmental efforts to regulate tobacco had been fundamentally feeble. The question, in hindsight, is whether the tobacco industry influenced the public policy process in a legitimate manner. The answer must be, despite technical niceties, a resounding no. This is because the tobacco industry effectively corrupted the public policy process for its own ends rather than contributing to an honest public discussion. Politicians were afraid to lose their financial

Reading - Assignment Example In the winter of 1906-1907, Pablo designed the first elements of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. The author appreciates that the twentieth century artist developed his concepts in an intensive manner. The design took place through a program planned consciously similar to the works of Gericault and Leonardo. Picasso painted his product on an eight feet canvas in the summer of 1907. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon provided the rift as well as the divide between ninetieth century art and future designs (modern) designs in painting (Chave 600). It remains the hallmark of art over the one hundred years. Chiva holds that time and events at the time allowed Picasso to do what he did. Nothing was strange because other events were happening in other areas as well. In 1909, Schoenberg composed the Erwatung and The Right of Spring by Stravinsky came to the limelight in 1910. In 1914, when Picasso was doing the later stages of cubism, Ulysses started. Caught up in blue and silver long curtains are five pink women in the painting. Two of the women are in an upright posture raising their arms with the purpose of flaunting their breasts. With protruding black eyes, the women always stare at the viewer. The designer decided to mask the other three women out of the five. Two of the three are dressed in African masks. Of the two, one intrudes from behind one of the cloth that remains jagged and the bother appears squatting in fabrics made of diamond. The author identifies that height carries a few more centimetres than the width in reality. This fact disposes any analyst to be part of symmetry and space. Work done by Picasso on Les Demoiselles d’Avignon was great and immense any way. The late ninetieth century and early twentieth century witnessed the development of provocative works in the industry with the same theme as that designed by Picasso. Identified in this category are novel by Zola, Pallas Athene by Klimt, and Madonna by

Stereotypes And Fantasies About The Us South Essay

Stereotypes And Fantasies About The Us South - Essay Example Music in itself has been described as an important parameter of culture (Abrams, 2011). What this means is that music is one of the constituent components of culture that can distinguish one culture from the other. Within the varying groups of culture that exists in the United States also, Southern American, or United States South is a core player with much influence in the socio-cultural dynamism of the country. Part of these dynamisms is the type of stereotype and fantasies associated with the South. In this essay, there is a defense for the statement that â€Å"Stereotypes and fantasies about the US South have been a major theme in the development of US popular music.† Common stereotypes and fantasies associated with the US South Historians and cultural experts trace the influence of the South on the socio-cultural dynamism of the US to days before the Civil War when there were accusations and counteraccusations of disparity against the South (Agnew, 2006). They believe tha t the current state of stereotype and fantasies that exists for people in the South is the direct cause of an unresolved conflict that can be traced to the aftermath of the war. Presently, the Southern ethnic heritage can be said to be made up of several cultural identities and differentiations mainly made up of African, Native American and European components (Baron, Hood, and Izard, 1996). Among these people, the commonest form of stereotype that has existed for years is a strong overlook in the US mass media, including literature, theatre and other creative forms of expressions (Kupperman, 2000). In some studies, the percentage of coverage given to this group is only 1% (Agnew, 2006). Generally, the cause of this is due to misconceptions associated with ethnic groups in the South as being cruel, of bad character, and uneducated. This stereotype has also led to a situation of fantasy within the group where they have argued that the Southern is also good for the highest positions o f the land, especially Blacks. How stereotypes and fantasies about the US South have influenced themes of US popular music Indeed, popular music gives a major cultural identity to US as a country. The themes of popular music have somewhat influenced the popularity of this type of music and contributed to its current international status (Kupperman, 2000). Without an iota of doubt, it can be said that the stereotype about the US South, and for that matter, the fantasies that have developed from it therefore has been very influential on the themes of US popular music. Specific examples can be given to how themes of US popular music has for years sought to justify the content of the Southerner’s character, saying that the Southerner is as good as the Northerner for any top decent position within the land. For example in 1983, Blowfly used the theme of his music as a crusade for the possibility of a Black President, titling his album, â€Å"The first black president†. What is more, in 1988, the US hip hop group, NWA made a music video that focused on the theme of a Black person being as fit for the presidency as a White when they had a caption from the White House that read, â€Å"Live from the Black House†

Immigration to USA Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Immigration to USA - Assignment Example Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCI) and the Bureau of Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). The jurisdiction and oversight of these agencies was transferred from the Justice Department to the DHS (Rudolph 6). All these were supposed to keep the American security at the realm. The reorganization brought together some or all the 22 federal agencies that formed a cabinet agency called the department of homeland security (DHS). These agencies included the US immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). This department had been part of the department of justice, but was later divided into three new agencies which were housed within the DHS. This restructuring process created the largest restructuring of the executive-branch functions since the establishment of the department of defence after the Second World War (Perrow web). The immigration policy is supposed to ensure aliens and criminals do not gain access to the United States. The officers in the immigration department ar e involved in issuing identification papers and citizenship to the people who meet the requirements of citizenship in the United States. The immigration policy has been tasked with offering service and enforcing sections of the immigration policy in America. There is however a difference between immigration policy service and the immigration policy enforcement. ... While both of these are important elements of the policy, enforcement has been given more emphasis than service. Most people confuse that the work of the immigration policy is just to enforce the policies which is not the case. Mostly, we do not hear about the service function of the policy as the news entirely covers the enforcement section of the policy alone. There has been a huge objection to the law like the Arizona SB 1070 which allows a legal enforcing officer to arrest and detain a suspect if the officer can prove that the person is an alien. However, those in objection point out that it is hard to tell who exactly is an illegal immigrant and who is not. Thus, the law has been deemed to target the Latino tribe of the people in the country. There are various pros and cons to this law. The law has been described as a means of profiling and narrowing down the number of suspects by the criterion of race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion (â€Å"National Conference of State Leg islatures† web). This has helped to narrow down the number of suspects. As a method of racial profiling, narrowing down the field of suspects is legal as it helps identify suspects easily. However, the law has its bad side since the law enforcing officers can decide to target a particular race like the Latino. It also makes a certain tribe feel alienated from the rest of the society. Moreover, this law is not only discriminative but also delays justice imposing danger to the suspects. Since the law is targeted at identifying and arresting suspects, there is the likelihood of increased arrests made by the officers. Since the law requires an officer to make an arrest in case they suspect the person to be in the country illegally, the number of arrests is likely to be more and therefore less

Alternative Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Paper

Alternative Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis - Research Paper Example The classic symptoms of RA are swelling, stiffness and pain in the joints. [1] Characteristics RA is characterized by inflammation of the synovium, progressive bone erosion, joint malignant, and destruction of surrounding tissues and muscles. Quality of life Some factors that effect the RA patient’s quality of life are endemic to the disease. This helps to rule out the possibility of other disease. Patients rarely have RA as their only medical problem. It is estimated that seventy percent of the RA patients who are on DMARDS (disease-modifying ant rheumatic drugs) have at least one other disease. The combination of the RA and another co-existing disease ultimately leads to a higher rate of mortality as compared to healthy people. In other words, RA patients age faster than healthy people. This may or may not be the result of the initial onset of RA or whether the premature aging precedes the onset of RA. Statistics 2.1 million Americans (0.5% - 1.0%) are affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Women are twice as likely to have the disease as men. The onset of RA occurs between thirty to fifty-five years of age with a median age of fifty-five years. Forty-nine billion dollars is spent annually for direct medical and lost wages and productivity. This amounts to $8500 per RA patient per year as the average cost of pharmaceutical therapy for rheumatoid arthritis which amount to 9 million physicians’ visits and 250,000 hospitalizations per year. [2] Alternative Therapies Yoga Yoga is an alternative therapy that has its roots in ancient India. It was used by the Indian culture as a sort of psycho-spiritual treatment for various diseases. Yoga is considered to have a positive effect on mental and spiritual health. The National Health Interview Survey of 2002 on Yoga use in the United States discovered certain traits endemic to people who where regular practitioners. It found that yoga users were primarily Caucasian (85%) and female (76%) with a mean age of 39. 5 years. [3] In this study, it was found that the practice of yoga has a â€Å"modulating effect on physiological and neurophysiologic symptoms.† [4] Some of the documented effects of yoga practice found in this study were; decrease in resting heart rate, increase in baro- reflex sensitivity in healthy elderly patients in addition to significant blunting of heart rate and blood pressure. Other benefits included decreased symptoms of stress, enhanced quality of life, and normalization of mean daily cortical levels in patients with prostate and breast cancer. Yoga is used to treat depression, improve muscle strength, increase endurance, improvement of balance and flexibility. It has also been shown to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hand, osteoarthritis of the knee, carp tunnel syndrome and localized lower back discomfort. RA patients reporting depression and anxiety disorders saw significant improvement in their mental health. By decreasing disease activity, the RA patient has a decreased perception of pain. It was concluded that a yoga program may slow the progression of the disease, enhance physical function, and decrease the risk of falls. Exercise Exercise can be defined as a planned regime of physical activity with the aim of having the outcome of a positive health benefit. [5] Regular exercise is crucial in the battle against RA. Job Analysis Master Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Job Analysis Master - Essay Example It is stated, that job analysis is 'a process used to identify the important tasks of a job and the essential competencies an individual should possess to satisfactorily perform the job'. (Clifford, 1994) The purposes of job analysis are multiple, as well as there are multiple methods for conducting it. The aim of the work is to distinguish the main strengths and weaknesses of the job analysis methods existing at present, with trying to identify the most effective among them, if it appears to be possible; it is also necessary to try defining, which methods are mostly applicable in various instances, and should there be made any amendments to the job analysis methods, which are not most often used. The reasons for conducting the present research are the following: 2. It is not yet understood, whether there is the need for the creation of any new methods, with the aim of which it is necessary first to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the existing methods. The arguments to follow in the work will be based first of all, on the literary sources used in the present work, which are four and are represented by the peer reviewed journal articles and books on the topic. The arguments will also be based on the discussion of the existing advantages and disadvantages of the methods. The main aims of the answer are to be specified as follows: The conclusion to be reached will be based on the set aims, a... 2. It will be conclude which of the job analysis methods at present appear to be the most effective and display minimum disadvantages; 3. It will be necessary to conclude, whether the already described in literature job analysis methods need more extensive learning; 4. It will be necessary to conclude, whether there is need in creating any new job analysis methods. The conclusion to be reached will be based on the set aims, and will include the answers on the abovementioned questions. I guess, it will be beneficial to make the core of the conclusion related to the most effective job analysis methods among the already described. Analysis Identification and coverage of the main issues The rationale for the job analysis in general lies in the aim of protecting the public 'by assuring that individuals, who work in an occupation or profession are at least minimally competent'. (Gael, 1993) Thus, one of the key issues in discussing job analysis methods is in identifying, which of them appears to be more effective, and is thus the most reliable for ensuring this individual safety mentioned. Another key issue, is that despite the extensive literature sources on the topic, the importance of researching job analysis methods with distinguishing their strengths and weaknesses is not given due importance, and thus this work will be an additional attempt to provide the employer with the analysis of the key methods, making him understand the essential role which job analysis methods play in hiring qualified workers. The main methods of job analysis can be identified as follows: 1. Observation. Levin and Ash (1999) state, that the core issue of any observation in relation to job analysis is

The Corpse Bride Analysis with Final Cut Pro Essay Example for Free

The Corpse Bride Analysis with Final Cut Pro Essay Tim Burtons Corpse Bride is about a young man who accidentally marries a zombie bride. Victor Van Dort, and Victoria Everglot, are arranged to get marriage. After Victor ruins the wedding rehearsal, he ï ¬â€šees and practices in a forest near by, placing the wedding ring unintentional on a ï ¬ nger of a dead girl, who is now saying she is Victors wife. The Land of the Dead holds many bewilderments for Victor while he learns of Emilys past story and get to know one another better. Back at home with Victor away, Victorias parents decide to move forward and marry her to a newcomer in town named Lord Barkis Bittern. Soon after Victor is informed of Victorias impending marriage to Lord Barkis. Victor agrees to die for Emily for their marriage to be valid, after realizing he has lost Victoria. Victoria ï ¬ nds them both at a church and is followed by Lord Barkis. As Victor prepares to drink the cup of poison to kill himself, Emily has second thoughts, realizing she doing the same to Victoria that was done on to her, taking away her happiness. Lord Barkis intrudes, and Emily recognizes him as her former ï ¬ ancà © and murder. Lord Barkis tries to kidnap Victoria against her will, but Victor steps in to stop him. As Lord Barkis decided to leave he makes a speech and accidentally drinks a cup of poison that was meant for Victor. The dead drag the new arrival away for punishment. Emily backs out of her agreement with Victor, and sets him free to be with Victoria. Giving the wedding ring back to him, she steps into the moonlight, she transforms into hundreds of butterï ¬â€šies, leaving all to assume she found peace. I choose to do this paper on Tim Burtons Corpse Bride because I have always loved the colors, music, story, and even the characters. After all Emily went through she is still optimistic even in her afterlife. Victory fought through the whole movie for true love and in the end was rewarded. The characters do have ï ¬â€šaws but they are still enjoyable and relatable as well. This movie has amazing colors and lighting. Throughout the movie all the darks and lights are placed in the right spots to create a consistent mood. The characters also have so many shades of color to them. The music is just an added bonus to everything. Some of the songs fun and lively, while others are a bit more serious. Tim Burton always does a good job with his movies, and this one was no exception. While still enjoying all of the reason why I like this movie, I was watching out for all the transitions, cuts, color adjustments, and sound. Knowing that this ï ¬ lm was made by stop motion, made it a lot more interesting to experience. I know that there is only so much editing that can be contributed through a camera, while the rest must be from Final Cut. All the editing was done successfully, and if anything added more to the story and ï ¬ lm. Transitions were clean and nicely cut at appropriate spots. They were not a distraction nor did they interrupt the experience of the ï ¬ lm. The color was amazing, the darks were deep, the colors were pigmented. The editing on the contrast and saturation were perfect for the feel of the ï ¬ lm. The video and sound went very well together. I think that this was a huge factor in creating the ambience to this ï ¬ lm. The cute little features to this ï ¬ lm like how the sound goes with the ï ¬ lm was perfect. A good example is when Emily was playing the piano but her hand broke off and it continued to make the sounds of the keys with every little beat of the hand. Working this Final Cut I know how many options their are to decide between. They choose the right ones at the right time. They worked out every little detail, which Im sure took a while. Only doing a minute project took a few days, I could only imagine working on something that is two hours long. To think that this movie was created with a software that anyone has access too, and is easy enough to learn, is amazing. They did an amazing job on Corpse Bride and only inspires me as a student to reach farther and achieve higher. They successfully created a ï ¬ lm with a decent story line, amazing visuals with the use of colors, sound that enchanted the video, clean transitions from clip to clip and all together an enjoyable experience.

Styles of Two Great American Writers Essay Example for Free

Styles of Two Great American Writers Essay A writer’s style distinguishes him from other writers. The style a writer uses to write a story clearly indicates the tone of a story, vital for the reader to understand the story. The style of a writer is made up of different traits and characteristics used to write the story. These traits and characteristics include and are not limited to symbolism, characterization, and other elements. When evaluating a literature piece for style one should analyze the following five elements: diction, images, details, language, and sentence structure. Two well-known American writers with completely different styles are Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Hemingway and Faulkner’s similarities and differences in style become apparent when comparing and contrasting two of their famous short stories, â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† by Ernest Hemingway and â€Å"Barn Burning† by William Faulkner. Diction involve word choices a writer makes for his story. These word choices may be used to achieve an overall feeling from a reader toward a story. Diction also reflects the writer’s attitude toward his subject. Ernest Hemingway’s choice of diction in â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† are simple words that directly mean what they stand for. Hemingway uses simple, less complex words to describe both characters and setting. Examples of diction usage for setting are found in the title, â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† (Hemingway 141) and â€Å"pleasant† (Hemingway 143). The two waiters describe the customer as a â€Å"clean old man a good client† (Hemingway 141). Hemingway’s choice of diction was blunt and to the point. The diction usage does not let the reader get funny ideas or leeway to think anything other than what Hemingway says. This element of Hemingway’s style reflects when the young waiter states the old man is â€Å"drunk† (Hemingway 141). The young waiter does not suggest he was tipsy or that he seemed intoxicated, he simply meant he was drunk. Hemingway uses the Spanish word for nothing, â€Å"nada† (Faulkner 145) to substitute words from the Lord’s prayer, in the old waiter’s speech of despair and loneliness to interrelate the theme. Building a sympathetic feeling from the reader toward the character’s way of seeing his lonely world as nothing, was Hemingway’s intention in doing so. In comparison to Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner’s use of diction involves more complicated words due to the fact they’re slang and misspelled. Some misspelled words and slang are â€Å"kin hisn [and] hit† (Faulkner 145) which stand for the words can, his, and it. The reason for the use of a southern accent as diction is to set the mood of where the story takes place. Racist slurs such as â€Å"nigger† (Faulkner 146) also make up the diction of the story. Such racist slurs are used to build a certain attitude toward the character who says them. Faulkner describes Abner’s walk as â€Å"stiffly† (Faulkner 146) which also affects the reader’s feelings about a character. Sarty uses the word â€Å"bovine† (Faulkner 152) to describe his fat sisters. For many readers who are not familiar with the south or the last century the complex word usage in â€Å"Barn Burning† mean many things and nothing at times, this affects the reader’s attitude toward the story as a whole. The overall use of language in an entire story also makes up the writer’s style. Different types of language would be formal or informal, scientific or abstract, etc. There are no rules to correct language for a writer’s style. â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† uses informal and conversational overall language. Incomplete statements and fragments that cast full scenes in form of conversation create informality of the story . â€Å"‘He hung himself with a rope. ’† (Hemingway 142) Also, a device Hemingway uses when a characters pauses and then speaks again in the following line make up the informal language. ‘â€Å"He’s drunk now,’ he said. ‘He’s drunk every night. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (Hemingway 142) The language used in â€Å"Barn Burning† by William Faulkner includes colloquial, informal, with some interior monologue. The southern drawl creates a particular colloquial dialect. â€Å"‘Naw,’ he said. â€Å"Hit don’t hurt. Lemme be. ’† (Faulkner 147) Interior Monologue also makes up the element of language. â€Å"I could run on and on and never look back, never need to see his face again. † (Faulkner 155) is Sarty’s interior monologue. Faulkner uses interior monologue to prove Sarty was not allowed to express himself freely out of fear. The sentence structure used in a story has an impact on the reader’s attitude. The sentences may be structured in a variety of ways to get certain points and feelings across. Types of sentence structure include short, long, simple, complex, and even interrupted sentences. Sentence structure in Ernest Hemingway’s â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† includes regular speech patterns. This would include short, choppy, simple and direct sentences. Examples of these types of sentences include, ‘â€Å"He has plenty of money. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (Hemingway 141) and â€Å"‘Nothing. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (Hemingway 141) Hemingway’s sentence structure also includes long, compound but simple sentences. â€Å"In the day the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference. † (Faulkner 141) Formal, complex and long drawn-out sentences make up the sentence structure in â€Å"Barn Burning† by William Faulkner. Faulkner’s style, most of the time formal and excessively detailed, creates sentences extremely complicated that many times the best way to understand them is to go back and reread the sentence. â€Å"The boy, crouched on his nail keg at the back of the crowded room, knew he smelled cheese, and more: from where he sat he could see the ranked shelves close-packed with the solid, squat, dynamic shapes of tin cans whose labels his stomach read, not from the lettering which meant nothing to his mind but from the scarlet devils and the silver curve of fish-this, the cheese which he knew he smelled and the hermetic meat which his intestines believed he smelled coming in intermittent gusts momentary and brief between the other constant one, the smell and sense just a little of fear because mostly of despair and grief, the old fierce pull of blood. † (Faulkner 145) The five basic elements interrelate to create the style of a writer. After the reader understands style, the tone and the true meaning of a story become apparent. The style of both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are different with only a few similarities. One style (Hemingway) being simple and to the point, the other (Faulkner) complicated and full of details. Although the differences are many, one apparent similarity is the informality in the overall language of both stories. Neither style ranks better than the other. The reader changes the value of each style depending on what they appreciate reading.
